Welcome to our Blog!

We are five UNC students, three freshmen and two juniors, who will be writing assignments for our English class and posting them here. We will be covering a range of topics from neuroscience to the arts. We’re five different people, from varying backgrounds, offering unique opinions. As class assignments, these could be dry, but that would be boring! We want to deliver our posts in a way that will draw you in and make you want to read more and follow us.

So why would you read this? You might be a fellow UNC student who is super connected and inquisitive. You get millions of emails a day, check your twitter feed and update your facebook status. You also enjoy looking at UNC Memes and TarHeel MakeOuts when you aren’t standing in the student section for basketball games. When you’re not using your free time to explore social media, you might be involved in research or community service on campus. Even if you aren’t a UNC student, you can appreciate, as a fellow collegiate or future collegiate, a sampler of the many things we learn here at UNC. It might make you jealous or just be intimidating, but either way we hope you enjoy!

Now that you are on board, it is time for you to meet us as individuals:

Anne Clark Hathaway is a Junior Transfer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying Communication Studies. As a born and bred Tar Heel, Anne Clark loves Carolina Basketball and Football and watches it religiously. When she isn’t watching UNC Sports, Anne Clark likes hanging out with her friends and staying connected with her family. She also enjoys supporting various organizations and movements, such as End it Movement, which fights to end slavery, and Up ‘til Dawn, which supports St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Anne Clark is originally from Charlottesville, VA and spent time during the summer on Ocracoke Island, NC, which was always a retreat from the real world. She has one younger sister and the best dog in world.

Meredith Parker is a junior at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is originally from Concord, North Carolina.. She transferred here from the College of Charleston and while she misses that beautiful city, she has been a Tar-Heel since birth. She enjoys going to and watching any sport the Tar Heels are playing but her favorite is Carolina basketball. She loves going to the beach whenever she gets the chance. She is also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority here at UNC and being an only child, she loves spending time with her sisters. With her sorority’s philanthropy, Breast Cancer Awareness and Education, she and her sisters do multiple service projects throughout the year which has fostered her love for service. She has a cat and a dog and absolutely loves spending time with them whenever she gets the chance! Her favorite television show is Duck Dynasty (if you haven’t seen it you are missing out!) and her favorite band is The Avett Brothers.

Christine Kim is currently a first-year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is famous for its beautiful campus, outstanding division 1 sports teams, and excellent quality of education. She is a New Yorker trying to adjust to southern life down in North Carolina. Christine is unsure of what she wants to major in at the moment and keeping her options open. She enjoys meeting new people and learning new things – both of which are common occurrences at Carolina. She loves watching and playing sports, especially volleyball and basketball. Working out is a must in her daily routine; staying fit is both a hobby and necessity to her. In her free time, you can find her on Facebook, Twitter, and basically any type of social media. She likes staying connected to her friends and family and being updated on virtually everything going on. She is looking forward to her remaining 3 years at UNC and hoping to find what she is truly passionate about.

Reagan Toal is a freshman at UNC studying English in hopes of one day becoming an epidemiologist; totally unrelated to English, she knows, but she likes helping people - and taking on an insane course load. She loves laying in hammocks at the beach doing her favorite nerdish activity - reading, though the sun turns her pale skin the approximate color of tomatoes. Her reading is typically joined by a lovely soundtrack of her favorite artists, which vary from Eminem and Chief Keef to Young the Giant, Vampire Weekend, Disney movie soundtracks and (her personal favorite) old classic rock icons - the Who, Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, et cetera. Other hobbies of hers include swimming, and, in general, sports, fashion, travel.... to just name a few. As the oldest of seven children, family is important to her, and she has extensive, to the point of excessive, experience in taking care of small little bundles of... joy (or demon spawn, depending on how you look at them). After leaping for joy upon receiving her letter of acceptance to UNC, she immediately packed her bags to come and join in on the joys of YoPo, UNC basketball, and the epic wonder that is Gio Bernard. Then she realized that college includes papers, homework, and exams.

Katie Brvenik, a cello performance and math decision science double major, is an eclectic music lover, math geek, tennis junkie, and pun enthusiast. She’s a flavored coffee addict, grammar nerd, has a Parks and Recreation obsession, and thinks Carolina blue is the most exquisite color around. Born on Virginia’s rural Chesapeake Bay and raised in a half-farm town half-college town in Connecticut, her time in vibrant Chapel Hill will certainly be a journey of new and unexpected experiences in college life that she cannot wait to uncover. Her greatest dream in life is to work a flexible job at her Alexandria, VA home and have a family who will put up with the insane number of dogs she plans to own. Like the typical first-year UNC student, she is simply trying to use this combination of interests and quirks to find her own place in what is deemed the “real world.”
